Industry experts from seven flooring manufacturers banded together in late 2016 to form the Multilayer Flooring Association (MFA) with the clear intention of establishing standards to help consumers and industry players gain a better understanding of the fast-emerging and evolving flooring category. In less than a year, the association has achieved that goal, establishing a new, 100 percent consensus approval on its ASTM standard, said Harlan Stone, president of the MFA and president and CEO of Halstead International, parent company of Metroflor Corp.

Multilayer flooring category sees growth & change

In just a few short years, the multilayer flooring (MLF) category has come a long way. The segment first hit the scene in 2013 in the U.S. when USFloors introduced Coretec, a wood plastic composite (WPC) product. It was a product that USFloors president Piet Dossche happened upon by chance in China, when looking for an outdoor decking product. Instead, he found an extruded wood plastic composite in a sheet product for use as a building material, which he and his team decided to combine with a luxury vinyl tile (LVT) top layer in order to create the ultimate waterproof floor.

MFA Formalizes Nomenclature for Rigid Core Vinyl Products

Calhoun, GA, December 12, 2017-After multiple meetings and considerable industry consultation, the MFA board of directors, with unanimous agreement, has aligned on two category names to describe rigid products in the multilayer vinyl flooring category. The categories are defined by the type of core in the product:

• WPC products represent the class of rigid vinyl flooring products with an expanded or foamed polymer core;

• SPC products refer to the class of rigid vinyl flooring products with a solid polymer core.

Focus on Rigid LVT: Transforming the resilient flooring market – Feb 2017

It’s an innovative flooring solution growing so fast that it can’t be pinned down with a name. It started off as WPC, which stands for wood polymer composite (and not waterproof core), but as producers have started to experiment with the construction and materials, they’ve turned to calling it rigid-core and solid-core LVT to distinguish it from the original Coretec product developed by US Floors. But by whatever name you call it, rigid, multi-layered, waterproof resilient flooring has been the hottest product in the industry for the last couple of years.
